Greetings I have been searching the net for the past three days on a artist whose paintings my family have recently required/unearthed from a death in the family. The nearest spelling that we can discern from the paintings is: Joibez or Jabez Lowthian (on one painting the name is altered to Lowthiane) and one is dated 1876. One painting is of a bridge over water, the other is a laneway with a river beside it. Best guess is that they are watercolours. Any help in identifying this artist would be greatly appreciated for sentimental value for the family

I was referred to this message after making a similar enquiry. I have an oil painting, which I should think dates from the latter part of the nineteenth century. I moved it recently and found that the wooden backing board was loose, and then found, written in a quite large copperplate hand ... *The old Mill at Dockray, Ullswater Drawn by Jabez Lowthian* ... this is on the back of the panel on which the oil is painted. I doubt if the painting has any great monetary value - I certainly paid very little for it - but I should be interested to know if you have been able to trace Jabez L.

Somewhat after your original enquiry! I too have a painting by Jabez, and have been trying to find out more for many years. We have just found out by sheer coincidence that he is linked to my husbands family. (He is my husbands 4th cousins Great great uncle!!) Jabez Lowthian was an artist born in Renwick in Cumberland in 1823. He painted a few pictures around this area. Mine is of the Cross Keys Inn at Carleton near Penrith, and I believe there is also one in exsistance of Mardale Church. He had four daughters and three sons and lived for some while in Carlisle.

Hi there. I am a descendant of Jabez Lowthian and would love to make contact with anyone that has knowledge of him.
