Are there EUROPEAN ARTISTS breaking through???

That depends on the definition of "breaking through" and what it entails. Unfortunately it would seem that the "Artworld" (Danto's term) still considers New York to be it's centre. I'd love to be able to put hand on heart and proclaim a British artist as making some sort of headway in an Internationalist sense, but, to be honest, British art in general - or at least the more well-known Sensation artists - are still too heavily under the influence of Bruce Nauman (my favourite artist) to let me do so with any conviction. A specific British artist that I see beginning to make a real breakthrough in the British art scene at least is Scottish artist David Shrigley. (No I'm not just saying this because he works in Scotland ) His particular brand of childish, surreal, serious, absurd musings are capable of being at once grin-worthy, poignant and socially referential at a darker level. I don't know if it's just me or not, but I look at his work and think of Douglas Coupland's writings.
