I just returned from a Carnival cruise that had Park West at Sea auctions every afternoon. I really enjoyed going to them and learning about art, but I didn't see where they needed to held everyday. I went three times, and one of those times was on the last day when I "won" 6 seriolithographs. The shipping/handling was to be $35 for the first 5 and $25 for the next 5. I could also buy the certificates of authenticity for an additional $110. I had to "think" about it and went back later that night to make my decision.
Before dinner we went to purchase our seriolithographs. Now we were in a smaller room and the guy next to me was purchasing over $21,000. in art. I felt like I couldn’t wait to get out of there because I was going to tell them to eliminate one of the posters and let me just ship the 5 seriolithographs of my choosing without the certificates of authenticity for a total of $35.00. I figured any 5 posters are worth $35.00.
Pieces:
Jean-Claude Picot
Coa Le Vase Bleu De Madrid
Linda Le Kinff
Grand Orchestre
Itzchak Tarkay
Indigo Chapeau
Anatole
Venice Yellow Sunset
Littorio Del Signore
Nuages 2003
I just returned home today and started scouting around on Google and found this forum and eBay postings. I can’t believe the difference in what people are charging for these seriolithographs. It makes you wonder what anything is worth. I went to www.allposters.com and found that even they charge over $40 for a Tarkay. This whole experience makes me feel like I wasn’t cheated at all, and I did learn something about art in the process. I probably would have bought an oil painting if it was reasonable. My husband wasn’t with me, and even though I can make a decision my own, he has to look at it.
Sidebar:
Not all of their work includes framing and shipping. This can be a drawback when you can’t carry it off the ship or you have to add the cost of shipping to a piece.
