At the risk of sounding too much like a naif, I am looking for a practical definition of the role of the art historian in society. I am, admittedly a humanist at heart and value the contributions of art to cultual identity and continuity. Is this too limiting?
I am teaching a World Art History Class for the first time and I'm struggling with a satisfactory definition with which freshmen can relate. Anyone have a suggestion?
